Venus Ship is a collective of nine musicians that emerged from the underground scene in Bologna and has been active for several years. The band is defined by an orchestral sound that blends funk, soul, jazz, blues, rock, hip hop, and cinematic music, bridging the gap between the 1960s and 70s and the present day. The collective also embraces a militant narrative, dedicating its music to the struggles and the significant figures of the past who fought against injustices that remain painfully relevant today. Drawing on these stories of rebellion, Venus Ship forges a connection to the present, demonstrating how music can challenge flawed social paradigms, spark reflection, and inspire change. It is no coincidence that their album “Underground Foxes” (Irma Records, 2025) has been described as a musical manifesto against social inequality—a work that fuses sonic exploration with civic engagement. Their new album, “Impossible Escape,” explores conflict in all its various forms—from wars and political repression to internal fractures and the contradictions of identity. It traverses and reworks vastly different musical languages, employing them as tools for resistance and narrative tension. Spanning cinematic funk, 1930s-style orchestral swing, the raw edge of hard rock, hip hop, and the musical roots of New Orleans, the record makes no attempt at a comforting stylistic synthesis. Instead, it thrives on the constant friction between disparate sonic worlds and eras, treating tradition as something living, contemporary, and profoundly rebellious.
