Cari Lekebusch has amassed a whole drawer full of aliases, and Mr. Barth is a slower-burning one named after Heinrich Barth, the German explorer who crossed the Sahara around 1850 in a bowler hat. Inspired by steampunk, Grace Jones's Sly & Robbie productions and the late Model 500's 'No UFOs', he made deeper, lazier grooves between 1988 and 1995. These selected cuts from 1991 to 1995 first came out on Plumphouse and Stephan Grieder's SVEK. They are rich in rubbery basslines, dusty drum machines and desert-dry atmosphere that make for strange, patient yet surprisingly funky listening. A neat companion to his Vector reissue that reminds just what a powerhouse Lekebusch has always been.
