Description
Dééfait is an occult ritual of tribal invocation, an introspection held underwater, an inverted exploration, a winding path through the brackish, stringy waters of psychedelic rock. It really did take a strange coincidence to give birth to this band with the odd name, which despite its slightly loser-ish ring has, from its very first steps, laid the groundwork for a certain kind of success. First there was the chance that took Ric Lara 9,000 kilometers from the Mexican capital that watched him grow up, and from which his band borrowed its name: DF for Distrito Federal, Mexico City's other name. DF is also the setting of Roberto Bolaño's novel The Savage Detectives, which deeply inspired him while writing their first EP. Then there was the offbeat idea of the Stay Hungry sessions, born in autumn 2021 when Covid had us all stuck on reruns: with help from Grégoire Couvert and Enir Da, Ricardo would host musicians at home, instructing them to play on unusual or even experimental instruments, then sit down for a chat over a drink, the substance of which would later be delivered as voiceover. That's how he came to meet Pays P, the band fronted by the Valero brothers, who were then coming off a fine tour supporting Big Thief. A meeting both human and musical, fed by influences ranging from Fugazi's riffs to the savagery of Boredoms, between five musicians who appreciated the density of Terminal Cheesecake as much as the electric energy of CAN, or the inventiveness of the Manchester collective Gnod. It was Andy Blundell who was entrusted with mixing the album - a step up from the self-titled EP released in December 2025. Where the EP offered a fairly heterogeneous set of tracks, the album asserts a more organic narrative unity. Constantly shifting between languages (English, French, Spanish), Ric explores varied themes where meaning and language bend to timbre and rhythm: musicality outweighs intelligibility, density outpaces intention. This is where Dééfait finds its singularity - a wailing voice, at times piercingly high (hence the "heliumcore" tag that keeps coming up), haunting a foundational structure driven by the bass, over which layers of guitar trade off, their harmonics tangling with the obsessive echoes of their vociferous frontman. Recorded at the legendary Black Box studios in Angers (Peter Deimel), mixed by Andy Blundell. Noise Rock / Psychedelic / Dark Independent for fans of Fugazi, Boredoms, Gnod
