Description
LIMITED LAVA MARBLES COLOUR VINYL Glenn Kotche and Darin Gray re-connect as On Fillmore for their new album Inferno, out on We Jazz Records sister label Other Power December 11th. Best described as acoustic doom music and, as Jim O'Rourke once put it, "the rhythm section's revenge", Kotche on drums and Gray on bass are no strangers to followers of adventurous music. Kotche is known as the drummer of Wilco and from his solo work, Gray most recently as member of the avantgarde jazz outfit Hatka, and previously from Brise Glacé, Grand Ulena, Akira Sakata & Chikamorachi, and more. Inferno is the final third of On Fillmore’s love-letter-to-Brazil trilogy which began with Extended Vacation (Dead Oceans, 2009), and followed with Happiness of Living (Northern Spy, 2017). Darker in tone than On Fillmore’s previous five albums, Inferno feels like a fever dream. On Inferno, On Fillmore get loose to deliver a dense, heat seeking, hallucinatory trip down a river, with an epic, heart of darkness, destination. Bubbling. Brooding. Simmering. Boiling. Floating. Hovering. This is "bass and drums", but it's also not. Is it a bunch of instruments, way more than two? Or just one? Maybe a single large non-electronic machine operated by two musicians, pulling together. Whatever it is, it's beyond instrumentation and it's out to roll over us with one giant (and sometimes terrifying) hug of sound. On Fillmore formed in 1999 and is currently based between Chicago (Glenn) and Forssa, Finland (Darin). First visiting Brazil to perform at the 2005 Perc Pan Festival in Salvador and Rio, On Fillmore had what they describe as "a musically life-changing experience". The journey that began then, culminates now on Inferno. The trilogy is completed some 17 years after it began. On Fillmore has been a rhythm section since 1997 and On Fillmore since 1999. They are also the rhythm section for William Tyler’s album Modern Country, several Jim O’Rourke albums and they form half of Saccata Quartet.
