Club Coco is very excited to present its first-ever 7-inch, bringing together two tropical dancefloor gems from the archives of HAM Music, the legendary independent label from Barranquilla, Colombia. Founded by Hernán Ahumada Martínez, better known as “Raspaíto”, HAM Music became an important force in the development of Terapia Criolla and Champeta. With roots in the city’s record shops, picós and neighbourhood parties, the label created space for local artists to do their thing, putting out music full of rhythm, humour and a healthy dose of dancefloor madness. On the A-side, “Karina” by Caribe Stars, featuring Abelardo Carbonó, is a hypnotic groove that marked the beginning of HAM Producciones and Caribe Stars. Written by Carbonó and dedicated to his daughter, the track brings together his unmistakable guitar and bass playing with the percussion of Álvaro Cárdenas. A special record with a story to tell, it has continued to find its way into the bags of selectors and collectors around the world. Flip it over and you’ll find “El Baile del Robot”, featuring Oscar Narváez, aka “El Mago del Ritmo”. Inspired by Congolese soukous and the sounds that travelled through Colombia’s Caribbean coast via the powerful picó sound systems, the track is a futuristic tropical party starter. Narváez’s charismatic vocals meet Carbonó’s irresistible guitar work for a groove that’s impossible to sit still to. Two sides, two dancefloor weapons, and a little piece of Caribbean musical history. We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off Club Coco’s 7-inch series. ¡A gozar!
