ATELIER (10", LP)

Description

Some of Stefan Goldmann's most angular soundscapes, from tentative to brutal, come together in this beautiful 10" ambient toolkit. The mini album's seven tracks have been built from a stem collection of individual layers which is available as a separate release on USB stick. The latter allows electronic live performers, adventurous DJs and sonic explorers to layer their own performance versions of the material compiled for Stefan Goldmann's aptly named 'Atelier'. 'Atelier' continues the lineage of earlier 'build your own' releases by Goldmann, such as his 'The Grand Hemiola' and 'Ghost Hemiola' double-vinyl locked-groove sets, as well as the upcoming 'Winter Is Coming', a work presented as a double CD-ROM set and akin to an atomic sample jigsaw puzzle. The individual layers of 'Atelier' come as intricately crafted microcompositions, which can be amalgamated and transformed through contact with further textures from the collection. The content is based on material originally developed by Stefan Goldmann for his key performances at landmarks such as the Philharmonie Berlin and Kyoto's Honen-in Temple, as well as festivals such as Mutek Buenos Aires and Noise Istanbul. As each layer explores a particular technique of analog or digital synthesis or complex interactions of interlocking processes, 'Atelier' serves as a window into the studio practice of one of today's most adventurous architects of sound. The 10" comes in an inside-out printed sleeve, featuring artwork by Californian artist Heather Day.
