Resident

Description

A bird in conversation with a lap steel guitar, a group of blacksmiths hammering out precise rhythms, field recordings from underground cellars and a sub-bass organ. Quite a few things happened during the making of Resident. Not all of them made it directly onto the tracks, but they found their way into the music somehow. We recorded at hotelpupik in Scheifling, Styria, an artist-in-residence space housed within the walls of an old castle ruin. All six tracks were recorded live on location on an old Fostex 8-track tape machine. Alongside our usual instruments, we brought modular synths, congas and an old Framus Manouche guitar instead of our usual electric guitar, plus whatever else we could fit into the car. We also used field recordings and sounds from the surrounding area. The result: percussive grooves, acoustic textures, deep bass and birdsong. Organic, technoid, with enough room for things to take on a life of their own. Afterwards, we let the material sit and ferment for a while, until eventually the cork popped. Six tracks emerged, full of energy and fun, and went through post-production without much fuss. Elektro Guzzi are still itching to get back at it.
