Dub Techno has long been an integral part of the electronic music journey, although possibly its most mythical. First appearing in the noise and backgrounds of the original techno artists of Detroit, then Berlin, London and beyond, the merging of the post-industrial percussion of electronic music, with the drone and noise from ambient experimentation, plus crucially the echo-heavy sound of Jamaica’s Reggae music and the subsequent creation of Dub. Forefathers in its creation were Basic Channel, both artists and label, formed by Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald in 1993. Moving from their Detroit inspired techno of their Maurizio project, Basic Channel explored the space and minimalist sound of delay from dub reggae, defining a new sound, genre and subsequent music scene, leaving a considerable mark on electronic music that cannot be overstated and the numerous inspired artists that followed. Tinkertoy were Andrew Wedman and Paul Shrimpton, two classically trained Canadian musicians suitably inspired by this new sound to create their own ‘version’. Mixing minimal techno with background noise and effects informed by experimental composition, their vision sound came to discover the beauty in sundry noise. Their sound palette developed through tape manipulation, field recording and processing of sampling environments and natural instruments, remodeling them using programmed software, developing a balance between precise sequencing with improvisation and unpredictability. Based in the vibrant electronic music community late 1990s and early 2000s Toronto, in just a 4-year period Tinkertoy produced a series of EPs and an album that showed their learning, mixing classical minimalism alongside pure techno. Presented here are 4 tracks, including the bliss of – the now suitable rare 12” cut – ‘I Understand Why You Want To Move To Montreal’, alongside album tracks ‘Bassalin’, ‘Editing Our Connection’ and ‘Here & There’, all having never appeared on vinyl before.
