After more than a decade spent collaborating with some of the UK’s most distinctive voices (Lianne LaHavas, Cleo Sol, Little Simz, Yazmin Lacey, Joy Crookes), pianist, composer and producer Sam Crowe steps back into the foreground with Heart/Space, his first album under his own name since 2013. Across the intervening years, Crowe has quietly become an integral presence within a generation of British artists reshaping the spaces between Jazz, Soul and contemporary music. And as leader of his cosmic soul project - Native Dance - he has continued to explore the outer reaches of jazz, electronics, soul and improvisation. Written, recorded and produced entirely by Crowe at his own studio, alongside a handful of talented friends and collaborators, HeartSpace is a collection of twelve pieces that feel both deeply personal and naturally expansive. Shaped by years spent moving between jazz tradition, soulful songwriting, improvisation and production. Acoustic instrumentation sits alongside subtle studio manipulation; intricate harmony gives way to open space; tightly constructed compositions unfold into moments that feel spontaneous and unresolved. There is virtuosity here, but never for its own sake. The title Heart/Space speaks to that balance: between emotion and openness, composition and intuition, the internal and the collective. Crowe belongs to a generation of musicians for whom jazz has never existed in isolation — absorbing soul, broken beat, hip-hop, electronic music and the sounds of the city without feeling the need to draw hard lines between them. Yet Heart/Space is less interested in genre collision than in finding a language of its own. After years spent helping shape the music of others, the album feels like Crowe taking stock: Released through Eglo Records, Heart/Space is both a return and a new beginning — twelve pieces from an artist whose presence has long been felt throughout British music, now creating a space entirely his own.
