Genre: Art Pop, Chamber Pop, Indie Pop, Ambient Moving between art pop, psychedelia and electro-acoustic curiosity, Petter Herbertsson appears on Quindi Records with his fifth album as Sternpost, kniv av nej. As well as his role as the driving force behind celebrated Swedish group Testbild!, Herbertsson's solo project has touched on ambient, jazz and neo-classical approaches as much as classic 60s and 70s songwriting. Swerving from the more luxurious production of his last album unworld.afterpop, kniv av nej seeks out a more intimate, stripped-back sound without sacrificing the rich musicality at the heart of his practice. "My main inspiration for kniv av nej is actually Syd Barrett," Herbertsson admits, "or rather my memories, mental images and waking dreams of when I discovered his music at the age of 16. I'm not really influenced by his songs, but rather by his ghost. I was trying to create music that would appeal to the person I was then, deeply into the DIY cassette culture of 80s industrial and experimental stuff with a serious lo-fi angle." Despite their brevity, the wistful, fleeting songs on kniv av nej are steeped in dynamic arrangements that tip their hat to the harmonic and structural ingenuity of the Canterbury scene, Rock In Opposition and bossa nova alike. There are fuller productions that reach measured crescendos such as 'fastlåst i en stad', but primarily this is an album the prioritises direct, uncluttered ideas. Herbertsson centres his songwriting on a simple set of tools - piano and guitar - but he ornaments each piece with flourishes of instrumentation; organ, xylophone, trumpet, even sitar on charming interlude 'fågelförmörkelse'. Beyond its compositional core, the album takes some playful sonic diversions. Brief vignette 'mélodie de gevingey' is peppered with the ASMR sound of a game of pool, from the scattering balls on the break to the satisfying plunk as a shot meets its mark. 'varats förfall' has a cassette-rewind at the midsection, and the album's title track is a captivating passage of clanking percussion evoking 23 Skidoo in line with the experimental post-punk streak that runs throughout Herbertsson's musical output. Tapped into an evergreen spirit of song craft while inviting a mischievous edge that steers away from over-sentimentality, Herbertsson captures the very essence of Quindi - music that wraps a subtly strange and wholly inviting atmosphere around a space and shuts the world outside.
