Description

Music From Memory presents ‘Over There’, a new album by French-Vietnamese sound artist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Margaux Gazur. Based in Berlin, Gazur works with acoustic instruments, field recordings, found sound and electronics, creating richly textured compositions shaped by memory, place and everyday experience.‘Over There’ is closely connected to distance and the people Gazur loves. Having lived far from home for many years, the album grew from the feeling of relationships stretching across time and geography, and from music’s ability to bring those connections closer again. The title track reflects this sense of being on a long journey, searching for a place to belong while slowly finding a way back towards home. Musically, the album follows Gazur’s characteristically organic and tactile approach. Acoustic instruments, soft electronics, environmental recordings and small incidental sounds are layered into loose, gently shifting arrangements, moving between ambient composition, musique concrète and more melodic forms. The music often feels intimate and close-up, with individual sounds retaining their physical texture even as they are folded into dreamlike, fluid soundscapes. Family memories run throughout the record. ‘Stella & Louise’ was built from recordings of Gazur’s younger sisters playing with toys and instruments during a Christmas holiday, including a clarinet scale played by Louise that became the starting point for the piece. ‘Finding the Way’ and ‘To the Ones We Love’ emerged from the same live performance, guided by childhood nostalgia and a feeling of reconnecting with family and old friends through music. Across ‘Over There’, fragments of specific places and moments are reshaped into something intimate and open-ended. It is ultimately a record about being away and coming closer to home, to memory, and to the people who continue to shape us across distance.
