Psilocybin EP

Description

Three years after his first appearance with the "Metaphysics EP", Paolo Mosca returns to Altered Circuits. The starting point remains the hybrid territory between trance and progressive house, but the explored sounds venture considerably deeper on the "Psilocybin EP", resulting in an EP with an overarching sense of elated, at times psychedelic flow. On "Welcome To The 4th Dimension", a pulsing sub and an intricate drum track laced with congas and zap-like snares set the stage for vigorous, razor-sharp synth work. From a productional POV, everything fits like a glove. This has always been one of Mosca's strengths, and he's only continued to refine his craft, culminating in the establishment of his own mixing studio in the meantime. His drive to get into the nitty-gritty extends to the composition too. "Transform" features a tapestry of synths darting across the spectrum, their cutoff filters gradually opening up towards a climax. A rubbery, resonant lead, introduced with measured, almost frugal restraint, brings a ton of extra character. The B-side's "Macro Dose" is propelled forward by pointed, proggy rhythms, while a haze of euphoric pads slowly seeps into the mix. On "Trip", a vintage formant-filter lead cuts through ecstatic salvos of arpeggiated synths. Both tracks are loopy and hypnotic, yet no bar sounds quite the same. Mosca's multicoloured productions, as detailed as they are functional, have the club floor firmly in sight. Precision never becomes an end in itself; it just serves to reinforce the music's forward momentum.
