Description

Playton Records makes its debut with "Back 2 Back Series", a four-track split from Gathaspar and label founder Tagir. The two sides take different routes, but both are rooted in groove, low-end pressure and a strong sense of space. At the core of Playton Records is a conscious approach to tone, frequency and harmonic structure. Sound is treated not only as a rhythmic tool, but as a physical and spatial element, with individual tones and their relationships shaping the identity of each release. This concept extends into the label’s visual language: for its debut, the central artwork translates the C major scale into geometric form, linking musical frequency and visual proportion as part of one system. Gathaspar opens with ‘Rock That Whoa’, where metallic tones, granular voices and a thick, viscous bassline create a murky, tactile groove. Short vocal commands cut through the haze while the arrangement plays with pressure, suspension and release. ‘Rock That Boat’ keeps the same weighty character but adds a more playful edge, with clarinet-like timbres, pulsing chords and hypnotic vocals pushing the rhythm into a looser, more fluid direction. Tagir takes over with ‘Mpondo Ritual’, built around the chant “Pholisile. Bakubonile na?” and driven by a deep, ritualistic pulse. Repetition and vocal presence give the track a trance-like quality without losing its physical club focus. ‘Got That Right’ closes the release on a more structured note, with organ tones, deep chords and sharper synthesized responses forming a stripped-back call-and-response over a solid bass foundation. A focused debut for Playton Records, connecting raw groove, tonal detail and a broader idea of sound as both musical material and visual structure.
